1792 Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon (46.85% abv)

The distillery was named 1792, the year in which Kentucky became a state. A gold medal winner at the 2018 International Spirits Challenge. A high rye component adds peppery lift to the predominant and sweeter corn in this bourbon, but this is a rich, creamy spirit at its core. Brown sugar, butter, toffee, apple pie and licorice come through on a velvety texture. It carries the 46.85-per-cent alcohol well, thanks to its depth of flavour.

Baker’s Kentucky Single Barrel Straight Bourbon Whiskey (53.5% abv)

The new labels will feature details about each of the particular barrels, including the age, the warehouse in which it was aged, and the date it was barreled.

The bourbon is named for Baker Beam, grand-nephew of Jim Beam and a now-retired sixth generation distiller who worked 38 years at the family’s distillery. It was first created in 1992 by Baker’s cousin Booker Noe, then Master Distiller, as a part of the Jim Beam Small Batch family.

“Baker’s Bourbon has always been a bit of a hidden gem of our portfolio,” said Fred Noe, Beam’s 7th Generation Master Distiller. “With my cousin Baker’s blessing, we’ve decided to give his namesake brand a little bit of the spotlight it deserves. We hope the folks who currently enjoy Baker’s enjoy it even more as a single barrel offering, and that some more folks want to add it to their repertoire.”

Balcones 2 Year Old Single Malt Batch 1 (That Boutique-y Malt Company) (51.1% abv)

“Very exciting times – this right here is the very first batch of Balcones single malt bottled from That Boutique-y Malt Company. The fabulous malt spirit was distilled by Balcones in Texas and then Brimstone-cask-matured for two years. The label is truly something to behold, depicting your every day metal concert, courtesy of The Brimstone Cowboys in the fiery depths of Hades. The Hell ‘n’ Back Tour looks pretty good, if a bit scary – that large demon sitting on a throne of skulls is rather unsettling, y’know…”  Master of Malt

Nose: Loads of sweet, juicy fruits rise from the glass, namely plums, with a buttery toffee backbone, dark chocolate croissant and blackberry jam with a very faint, delicate smoky undertone.

Palate: Even more of those juicy fruity notes and sweet, slightly burnt crème brûlée, with a generous helping of peppery spice and lots of drying oak among the baking spices.

Finish: Dusty cocoa, sweet fruits and tannic oak, with a savoury smoky finish among lingering syrupy cherry fruit sweetness.

Bard Muhlenberg Silver Muhl Whiskey (62% abv)

“Our Muhlenberg Silver Muhl Whiskey is a 124 Proof New Make spirit. For a high proof whiskey, it is surprisingly smooth! It makes an incredible mixer as well! At 124, it won’t get watered down and adds a nice KICK to any mixed beverage!”

Barrell Craft Armida Straight Bourbon Whiskey (56.41% abv)

Armida is a blend of three Straight Bourbons finished separately in Pear Brandy, Jamaican Rum and Sicilian Amaro Casks. It began as an experiment, searching for barrels with flavours and aromas that might compliment Bourbon. More than a year later, we have a whiskey that delivers ripe, floral pear notes, leading into hints of spice and arid citrus derived from the Amaro casks, followed by the toasty bourbon itself. This melange is framed by the ripe, tropical sweetness found in rum finished whiskeys. In short, Armida is a journey for the palate: complex and satisfying. 56.23% Alc./vol.

Other reviews… From the inventive minds at Barrell comes this whiskey, a blend of three Tennessee bourbons each finished separately in Jamaican rum, pear brandy, and Sicilian amaro casks. The nose is highly fruity and herbal, almost gin-like with notes of mint, grass, lemon and lime, pineapple slices, and wild strawberries. The palate is candied with Smarties, Runts, and mango. The finish is more of the same with lemon-lime candies. The unorthodox cask treatment creates some unexpected flavors, with the high proof amplifying the peculiarity., reviewed by: Ted Simmons (Spring 2021)

Barrell Craft Bourbon Batch 031 (55.6% abv)

Barrell Bourbon Batch 031 is a blend of 6, 7, 10, 15 and 16-year-old barrels from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana. The blend was built around the sweetness in a group of 99% corn bourbon barrels and a group of wheated bourbon barrels. To bridge these two groupings, Barrell layered in 15 and 16-year-old barrels for their gentle nuttiness and oak. Finally, a selection of 10-year-old barrels was added to bring notes of milk chocolate and tropical fruit.

On the nose, there is a rush of dry, notable oak, incorporating wormwood, tobacco, and pine needles. Curious and sweet with browned butter, candied walnut, and spiced apple pie. Other notes balance between woodsy and floral, such as thistle, milkweed, and poppyseed. As you emerge beyond the scope of oak, you find some fruity and sweet cream notes, the latter represented by peppermint latte and vanilla creme anglaise.

The palate shows moderate sweetness and juicy citrus, making for quite an easy pour. The fruit sings loudest here — pomegranate juice and strawberry rhubarb pie. Extractive elements of spice and tannin bring quince and ginger beer into the equation. The baking spice nods toward a Manhattan, garnished with an orange twist. Finally, some marshmallow root and pumpernickel take it in an earthier, cardoon-like direction. A quick burst of heat on the finish announces smoked paprika, black peppercorn, and spearmint. As it subsides, demerara rum and black cherry soda emerge. Finally, it fades to leave only a little chalk and slate. Bottled at a cask strength of 55.6% abv.

Rated 92 by Ultimate Beverage Challenge

Wildly aromatic, like a tug of war between spicy rye and Agricole Rhum. Dried stone fruits, fresh-pressed cane juice, cinnamon, warm cashews, and apple blossom come to mind. Intense and tropical on the palate, baking spice, fig, mango, and milk chocolate dominate with a touch of salted plum. – 2021 Ultimate Spirits Challenge

Barrell Craft Spirits – Premium Bourbon & Whiskey Tasting | June 8, 2022 at 7pm MT (Virtual Event)

Join Craft Cellars for a premium virtual bourbon & whisky tasting experience on June 8, 2022 at 7:00pm MT. Will Schragis from Barrell Craft Spirits will lead guests through a line up of Barrel Craft Bourbon & Whiskey.

A graduate of Wesleyan University and the Culinary Institute of America, Will started his career in drinks as a bartender and intern distiller at Kings County Distillery in Brooklyn, New York. After a stint in Napa Valley, he returned to New York to work as a sommelier in Eli Zabar’s family of restaurants and wine shops.

Later, he moved to Zachys Retail and Auction, one of the world’s leading fine wine and spirits retailers, where he managed sales and purchasing for the spirits department. It was there he met Joe, when Zachys became one of the very first retailers to carry Barrell Bourbon Batch 001.

From retail, Will transitioned his interest in terroir to a position managing brand development for Spiribam (then called House of Agricole) in Texas and the East Coast. There, he oversaw the growth of flagship super-premium rum brands like Rhum Clément, Rhum J.M., and Rhum Damoiseau.

In May of 2016, Will joined Barrell Craft Spirits as National Director. He works closely with our distributors and key accounts, and has an active role in product development. Will is also responsible for compliance, communications, incentives, planning, and market work. When he’s not busy spreading the word about the wonders of Barrell Craft Spirits, he also guest lectures on distillation science at his alma mater, the Culinary Institute of America.

Barrell Craft Spirits Bourbon New Year 2022 (57.67% abv)

New Year. New beginnings. New traditions. Every autumn, we create a very special blend of bourbons as a toast to the year to come. Barrell New Year Bourbon 2022 is a tribute to the fresh possibilities and sense of renewal that every new year brings. After the last two years, we’re also feeling particularly grateful for the amazing community of friends and partners that has supported Barrell Craft Spirits.

The nose is opulent, with clear notes of carrot cake and butterscotch pudding. The palate retains a creamy character but incorporates a much bolder tart-cherry acidity and pronounced minerality. Water reverses that dynamic, brightening the nose with a lemony freshness while imbuing the palate with a chewy, savory richness.

Barrell Craft Spirits Gray Label 15 Year Old Bourbon (50.2% abv)

Appearance: Bronze.

Nose: Starts with a puff of chalk dust and wood smoke. Underneath are notes of toasted marshmallow, warm honeycomb, and chocolate babka straight from the oven. Soon nubuck leather and sunflower seed jostle to the fore. Fruits emerge next, from Ginger Gold apples through roasted banana to strawberry jam, ending with chamomile and eucalyptus.

Palate: A syrupy and sweet arrival is kept in check by moderate heat and some light but gritty tannin. A vivid cola note dominates at first, then allspice, fennel seed, and peppermint lead the wave of oak spice. A little fruity spirit peeks through with pops of green grape, strawberry meringue, and jasmine.

Finish: The sugar washes away quickly, leaving a surprisingly dry, oily, palate with more noticeable tannin. The character correspondingly shifts to drier notes of pipe tobacco, walnut and iced coffee. As they fade a little more fruit emerges, around rhubarb jam and sumac.

With a splash of spring water: The nose becomes incredibly fruity, showing crabapple, lychee, and blackberry tart. The palate grows fruitier as well, here on watermelon and earl grey tea. But it also develops an earthy spiciness, along gingerbread, radish, and nasturtium.
