Maal wines is a new winery that had its conception in 2010 and came to fruition in 2013. Friends Alfredo Merlo and Matias Fraga come from different sides of the wine industry but had the same passionate goal of producing Malbecs that they like to drink, and sharing them with the world. Alfredo Merlo decided to dedicate himself to winemaking and completed vintages at Napa producer Harlan Estate in 2008 and 2012, Pulenta Estate in 2009, Montana Estate in New Zealand in 2010, and Achaval Ferrer in 2011. Matias Fraga came from the restaurant side and a chance encounter with the Catena family led him to work for Catena for 10 years. In 2010 Matias purchased a run down vineyard in the Uco Valley, which is now a major source of the grapes Maal uses.
