19 Crimes Shiraz Durif

Deep ruby in colour with a purple hue; aromas of coffee, dried fig, floral hint, jam and nutmeg; flavours replay on the aromas with an emphasis on coffee and fig that linger on the finish; moderate balanced acidity and supportive tannin.

1978 Kopke Colheita Aged Tawny Port

“Not one of the generally declared vintages for Port, this year produced some ripe, sweet single quinta vintages. It also was a good year for rich, sweet tawnies. This is ripe, toffee-like in character packed with ripe raisin and sultana flavors. It is a luxurious wine, of course ready to drink.” 94 points Wine Enthusiast

1994 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port

In a word, superb. It’s full-bodied, moderately sweet and incredibly tannic, but there’s amazing finesse and refinement to the texture, not to mention fabulous, concentrated aromas of raspberries, violets and other flowers. Perhaps the greatest Taylor ever, it’s better than either the ’92 or the ’70, though it’s very like the ’70 in structure. WS

2009 Gaudo Al Tasso (Magnum)

A careful selection first in the vineyard and then in the cellars,- both before and after de-stemming, – preceded a soft pressing of the grapes, harvested and fermented parcel by parcel fora whole series of different wines to blend.

A moderately warm fermentation used delicate extraction techniques to insure elegance and suppleness. Malolactic fermentation and 18 months of aging took place in small oak barrels. Ten months of bottle aging preceded the release.

On the nose the initial balsamic sensations are followed by aromas of ripe fruit and spices. The palate is velvety, with soft tannins and much finesse. The mouthfeel is well supported by savory mineral notes and a long persistent finish.

2016 Reva, Barolo Ravera D.O.C.G

The Réva winery in Monforte d’Alba dates back to 1867, but its modern era began in 2013, under the ownership of Miroslav Lekes from the Czech Republic. He appointed Gianluca Colombo as oenologist, and has worked tirelessly to perfect the wines produced on the small 7.5-hectare estate, while also seeking to improve sustainability. Vineyard practice is 100% organic.

TASTING NOTES
Barolo Ravera is as extremely complex as it is balanced and elegant. Scents are spicy, with floral (red rose), red and black berries and tobacco aromas. Acidity is lively on the palate, finishing full-bodied and persistent, with velvety, dense tannins.

FOOD PAIRING
Try it with boar sausage, aged cheese and honey, mushroom and pork risotto.

2018 Torbreck “RunRig” Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia

Complex and lifted aromatics of dense black fruits such as blackberries, satsuma plum and black cherry complimented with dark chocolate, cacao been and liquorice. The opulent mouthfeel, liveliness, and vibrancy is a real standout on a plush and velvety textured palate structure. The complex layers and fruit characters continue to evolve in the glass with firm but drying tannins seamlessly balanced with long acid and statuesque posture and length.

Torbreck’s 2018 RunRig needs a bit of air right now, as the nose and palate truly open up and expand after a while in the glass. Unlike some vintages, it’s rather tight and cedary upon first pour, then relaxes to reveal hints of stone fruit, blueberries, cherries, pastry crust and baking spices. In the mouth, it’s full-bodied and concentrated, richly textured and marked by ripe tannins, which leave behind a velvety, mouth-coating finish tinged with licorice and dark berries. While approachable now—and even damn enjoyable—it deserves another several years in the cellar. Drink the 2018 Descendant while waiting.
