95 Points – Decanter
“Founded on the site of a medieval village near Chianti Classico’s southernmost township of Castelnuovo Berardenga, San Felice has been owned by Allianz Group since the 1970s. The face of the winery is Leonardo Bellaccini, head of the winemaking team since the late 1980s. Through the extensive research and development at San Felice’s Vitiarium, he has been instrumental in reviving the almost-extinct Pugnitello grape, which is in this blend. Michaela Morris: A sweet, earthy nose with dark forest berries. Tannins still quite commanding. A cellar gem, with plenty more to give. Sara Bachiorri: Dried herbs with red and dark fruit aromas. Still pretty vibrant for a wine of this age. Good balance and a long, complex finish. Michelle Cherutti-Kowal MW: A touch of woodsmoke and spice appear along with ripe plum. Good freshness on the palate. Tastes younger than it is.”
This gorgeous, structured wine, made from 80% Sangiovese and 20% other native grapes, is all about depth and complexity. Ripe black cherry, blue flower, tilled soil, mineral, black spice and leather all jump out of the glass. The succulent fruit is impeccably balanced by fresh acidity and solid yet refined tannins. Drink now–2025.
