Angove The Medhyk

Intense inky purple with bright magenta hues. Classic McLaren Vale aromas of blackberries bitter chocolate and liquorice are perfectly held by carefully utilised French oak. The palate follows on from the initial aromas and is rich and full, with the abundant fruit flavours given structure by soft tannins.

Chateau Pavie Decesse 2010

James Suckling 97 points
This is fascinating with a nutty, dried herb, spices, berry and hints of toasted character. Full body, with chewy tannins and a long, long finish. This has a wonderful density of fruit and length. Amazing. Try in 2020.

Fontodi “Flaccianello della Pieve” Toscana 2017

Vinous – 97 points (Antonio Galloni)
Outer quote mark The 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is fabulous. Dark, sensual and enveloping, the 2017 captures the essence of the house style in its textural richness and baritone inflections. Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and chocolate infuse the 2017 with tremendous richness. The 2017 spent 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cask, the same aging regime as the Vigna del Sorbo, but with a bit more new oak. That approach worked very well, as the Flaccianello stands out for its exceptional textural elegance and finesse. It is a positively stellar wine.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 96 points
The Fontodi 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is a standout wine of the dry vintage. This pure Sangiovese opens to a dark garnet color with more visible concentration and density compared to recent past editions. This is a beautiful wine with pliant tannins, dark fruit richness, balanced acidity and a fruit-forward 15% alcohol content. The wine is big and bold when weighed on the Flaccianello scale (and even more so when weighed on the Sangiovese scale) with dark cherry, plum, spice, violet, chalk and campfire ash. Despite that power and inner opulence, this wine adds that zesty Sangiovese character with fresh acidity and an energized approach. This Flaccianello is whole and complete with the natural firmness and structure to hold it steady during the aging process. A small part of amphorae-aged fruit is added to the blend. (8/2020)

Luce della Vite 2013 Vintage 1.5L

If there are two names in the wine world that would join forces to make a knockout Tuscan wine, they would almost certainly be Mondavi and Frescobaldi. While Mondavi helped start a major qualitative shift in modern-day California, the Frescobaldi family have been making wine in Italy for seven centuries, and the ‘Luce’ is the perfect union of their new and old-world identities. The 2013 ‘Luce,’ a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot, is one of exceptional Tuscan charm, from a vintage heralded as “classic” by the Wine Advocate. With 97pts from James Suckling for its “beauty and polish” this easily stands up to peers at twice the price!

Sassicaia Tenuta San Guido 2017

This wine is chiseled and sharp with blackberry, ripe cherry, grilled herb and barbecue spice. The aromas flow from the glass in a continuous stream and are all marked by radiant intensity. The mouthfeel is long and powerful. The crisp linearity of the wine’s tannic backbone is perfectly measured to the volume and depth of the fruit flavors.

Blend: 85 % Cabernet Sauvignon 15 % Cabernet Franc
