Fortunate Son The Diplomat Napa Valley 2019

The wine is dark and rich and is not for the faint of heart, if you are looking for a light table wine, go away, quickly...this is wine for drinking, eating and making love. Vintage Notes The 2019 vintage was in every way a staggeringly great to me. I knew then, as I watched the vintage progress and when I finally and methodically picked the fruit block by block, passing through again and again to get just the perfect clusters, the fruit, those intense flavors, the richness were something incredible, even more so now, looking back, knowing now that the following year would bring so much carnage. How lucky I was, and I didn’t even know it. Vineyard Notes — Sourced from small, family vineyards, (in some cases for 3-4 generations) that are farmed with great care and attention. These vineyards (some are 80+ years old) have been brought together, actually woven together, so the magical fruit could at last become Fortunate Son. Composition — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a very small fraction of Petite Sirah. 94 Points Jeb Dunnuck - Jayson Woodbridge calls this a “21st Century Claret.” The Merlot-dominated 2019 The Diplomat comes from a handful of sites and would give a great Pomerol a run for its money with its darker red and black fruits, smoky herbs, and earthy goodness on the nose. These carry to a full-bodied, rounded, opulent 2019 with sweet, building tannins and a great finish. Give it a few years.
