Pewsey Vale 2017 "The Contours" Riesling

The 2017 vintage at Pewsey Vale saw a warmer than usual winter with lower rainfall, allowing for an even budburst and good shoot growth. Rain fell at intervals from November through to harvest. Mild summer days coupled with cool nights helped preserve acidity and develop fine aromatics. The fruit is drawn from old vines planted on the coolest slope in the vineyard, in grey sandy loam soils at about 1,500 feet elevation.

This single-block wine is made in an organic and biodynamic style, using wild (native) yeasts, no malolactic fermentation, and aged in bottle for five years before release.

In the glass the wine is pale straw with green hues. Aromas of classic lemon fruit and white flowers are enriched by bottle-aged notes of toast, clove oil and lemongrass. On the palate it shows concentrated power and depth—pristine lime juice, toasted brioche, sage oil and lime marmalade weave together. The acid is fresh and energetic, giving long length and balance even as richer, more mature flavours emerge. This is a Riesling built to age further, offering complexity now but with grace and tension for years to come.
