Port Askaig 45 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Port Askaig 45 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

An exceptionally rare glimpse into 1960s Islay, matured for 45 years yet still remarkably alive with tropical fruit and freshness. Mango, papaya and ripe citrus meet green tea, mint, gentle spice and beautifully integrated old oak, with decades of maturation softening the island’s smoke into something far more subtle.

Port Askaig 45 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Port Askaig 45 Year Old was distilled on Islay in 1968 and released by independent bottler Elixir Distillers. Port Askaig deliberately leaves the source distillery unnamed, presenting its whiskies under the brand rather than the distillery name. The official release describes it simply as a rare example of Islay whisky from the island's celebrated 1960s production era.

Independent records widely identify the whisky as Bunnahabhain, including Whiskybase, where the exact bottling is catalogued as a 1968 Bunnahabhain. Because Elixir does not officially disclose the distillery, I would keep this as enthusiast background rather than putting Bunnahabhain prominently on the product page.

The whisky spent 45 years in five refill sherry butts, with the casks brought together for the final year before bottling. The use of refill wood is particularly important at this age, allowing the spirit to mature for more than four decades without becoming dominated by tannin or heavy sherry.

Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich and intensely fruity with ripe mango, papaya and orchard fruit, layered with sticky nectar, earthy spice and a cooling touch of menthol. Palate: Fleshy mango and bittersweet orange lead into green tea, mint and roasted spice, with mature oak providing structure without overpowering the fruit.
Finish: Long and refined with orange blossom, leafy herbs, warm spice and cooling mint, supported by a subtle mineral quality
