Laphroaig Cairdeas 2026

LIMIT 1 PER PERSON/HOUSEHOLD | ONLINE ONLY

A landmark Càirdeas release and a first for Laphroaig, fully matured in French oak to bring a new dimension to its unmistakable Islay character. Dense peat smoke and maritime salinity meet leather, vanilla, liquorice and bright fruit, with the tighter-grained oak adding structure and spice while leaving Laphroaig firmly at the centre.

Laphroaig Cairdeas 2026

Laphroaig Càirdeas 2026 French Oak is the latest annual release created for the Friends of Laphroaig community and unveiled in connection with Fèis Ìle. Càirdeas means "friendship" in Gaelic, and the series has been released annually since 2008, with each bottling exploring a different interpretation of Laphroaig's heavily peated Islay spirit.

For 2026, Laphroaig has done something it describes as a first for the distillery: fully maturing the whisky in French oak casks. Rather than simply applying a French oak finish to conventional ex-bourbon matured whisky, the official release specifies 100% French oak maturation, using tight-grained European oak of the type traditionally associated with wine and Cognac. French oak brings a different structure to Laphroaig's famously medicinal, maritime spirit, adding spice, depth and softer fruit while retaining the peat smoke, salt and earthy character collectors expect from the distillery. It is a particularly interesting contrast to recent Càirdeas releases, including 2025's Lore Cask Strength, which combined five different cask types rather than focusing entirely on a single style of oak.natural colour.

Tasting Notes
Nose: Immediately smoky but layered with sweetness and savoury depth. Peat and leather mingle with a distinctly briny sea note, showing classic Laphroaig maritime character against the darker influence of French oak.

Palate: Oily and satisfyingly chewy, opening with campfire smoke before vanilla and black liquorice emerge. Bright fruit provides lift through the richer smoke and oak, creating an intriguing sweet, savoury and medicinal balance.

Finish: Long, smoky and structured, with lingering peat, maritime salinity, oak spice and liquorice. A little water brings forward softer fruit, sweetness and spice while allowing the peat to remain prominent.
