Lochlea Red Wine Cask 2026

Lochlea Red Wine Cask 2026 is the second annual release in the distillery’s limited Red Wine Cask series. Introduced in 2025, the collection is designed to explore a different red wine region and grape variety with each edition, allowing the cask influence to reshape Lochlea’s house style from year to year. The inaugural release explored Grenache, while the 2026 edition moves to Sangiovese casks from Tuscany, Italy. The whisky begins its maturation in first-fill Bourbon barrels before being transferred into carefully selected Sangiovese red wine casks for finishing. Sangiovese is particularly interesting here because its naturally bright acidity, red-fruit character and tannic structure can add depth without simply making the whisky sweeter.

Tasting Notes
Nose: Ripe red berries and baked apple lead with honeyed sweetness and gentle baking spice, giving the whisky a bright, fruit-forward opening.

Palate: Sweet and creamy with plenty of red berry character, developing into strawberry-like fruit and subtle nutty notes. The Sangiovese influence brings additional depth and a light tannic grip without overpowering Lochlea’s underlying malt character.

Finish: Gentle spice and pleasant oakiness linger alongside red fruit, cereal and a subtle drying tannin from the wine casks.
