Daou 2021/22 Pessimist Red

DAOU Pessimist Red (2021/22) is a signature Paso Robles blend from DAOU Vineyards that emphasizes ripe fruit, structure and balance. Rather than a single grape, it combines primarily Petite Sirah with Zinfandel, Syrah and a small amount of Lagrein, all sourced from Paso Robles’ warm Central Coast vineyards. After careful fermentation to capture intense fruit flavors, the wine is matured for around ten months in French oak barrels with a significant portion new oak, which adds depth and subtle spice while smoothing tannins and enhancing texture. This aging gives the Pessimist a rich profile that expresses both varietal character and the warmth of its Paso Robles terroir.

Tasting Notes:
In the glass Pessimist shows deep, rich color and an expressive nose of blueberry, boysenberry and black plum with layers of spice, lavender, truffle and hints of tobacco and leather. The palate is full and generous with lush black cherry, cassis and pomegranate framed by silky tannins and lively acidity. Secondary notes of cocoa, black olive and anise add complexity, and the finish is long with persistent dark fruit and spice. Together this makes a bold yet balanced red that’s plush but structured enough for food pairings or short-term cellaring.
