De Martino 2016 Vigno Old Vines Carignan

De Martino 2016 Vigno Old Vines Carignan

From the La Aguada Vineyard near the town of Sauzal Maule’s dry-farmed secano, this wine is from a very old vineyard planted in 1955. Consistent with the house style, while also adhering to the new vision of a carignan that is much fresher and fruitier than in the past, this wine is intense in its red fruit flavors and deliciously crunchy acidity. On the surface it might appear to be a fruity wine for quenching your thirst, but take a look at the web of tannins, and you’ll see that you have a wine to cellar for a decade. - Patricio Tapia - Descorchados

De Martino 2016 Vigno Old Vines Carignan

This wine comes from a small vineyard (4.5 ha) in La Aguada, Maule Valley, Chile, planted in 1955 and dry-farmed. The vineyard is a field blend of approximately 85% Carignan, 15% Malbec & Cinsault. The soils are deep, with clay and granite components, and the site benefits from cool Pacific-influenced breezes, moderating the growing season.

Deep ruby in colour, this wine opens with aromas of ripe black cherry, blackberry compote, and plum, interwoven with notes of smoke, dried herbs, tar and red licorice. On the palate it is medium- to full-bodied, showing concentrated dark fruit layered with firm, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity; the finish is long, with mineral and smoky undertones and a savoury persistence.

While the wine is showing impressive structure and complexity now, it is best enjoyed between 2023 and 2033, with a peak drinking window around 2025-2030 as the tannins soften and tertiary notes develop. Some sources suggest cellaring potential of up to 15-20 years.
