Mazzei 2019 Castello di Fonterutoli Gran Selezione

Fruit comes from a selection of parcels around Fonterutoli in Castellina-in-Chianti, planted on alberese and limestone soils at 470-510m altitude. The 2019 vintage had a warm, dry summer with occasional relief from late rains, allowing for optimal phenolic ripeness while retaining freshness. The wine is made from ~92% Sangiovese with a small remainder of other local red varieties. After fermentation, it aged ~18 months in oak barrels, some new, to build structure.

Tasting Notes & Serving Suggestions:
The wine opens with aromas of blackberries, cherries, violets, and floral notes, with hints of nougat and mocha. On the palate it is full-bodied and intense, showing ripe red berry fruit (sour cherry, black cherry), balanced by dusty minerality and a savory edge. Tannins are firm, fine-grained, and smooth, while acidity gives freshness. The finish is long and refined.
Serve well decanted at 17-18 °C (63-65 °F) in large red wine glasses to show off its aromatics and texture. Best with grilled lamb chops, braised meats, aged cheeses, or roasted game. Drink now with decanting, or cellar for 10-12 years to allow the wine to develop more complexity.
