Poggione 2019 Brunello di Montalcino

Poggione 2019 Brunello di Montalcino

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino pulls the taster close to the glass with its dark and earthy blend of crushed ashen stones, giving way to rosemary, cedar, exotic spice and a core of raspberry preserves. Enveloping and serene, this flows across the palate like pure silk, steadily building in tension as tart wild berries and orange hints give way to a sweet herbal thrust. The 2019 finishes with tremendous length and is classically structured, as crunchy tannins resonate and violet inner florals slowly fade over a tactile coating of minerality. Il Poggione has captured the radiance of the vintage. -Β Antonio Galloni

Poggione 2019 Brunello di Montalcino

This Brunello is made from 100% Sangiovese (locally β€œBrunello”) grown in the historic estate vineyards of Sant’Angelo in Colle, at elevations from ~150-450 m in the Montalcino hillside terroir. The 2019 vintage is celebrated for its balance of fruit ripeness and freshnessβ€”flowering and ripening progressed smoothly, benefitting from warm conditions tempered by cool nights, producing fruit with excellent structure, acidity and aging potential. The wine is aged traditionally for approximately 36 months in large French oak casks before bottling, following Il Poggione’s rigorous regime.

The wine presents a deep, luminous ruby hue with garnet accents. On the nose, aromas of red cherry, plum, dried rose petals, cedar, and licorice evolve into nuances of wet stone, forest floor, and autumn leaf. On the palate, it is medium-to-full-bodied with ripe red fruit, savory underbrush and vibrant acidity, framed by velvety yet firm tannins. The finish is long and mineral-tinged, with subtle hints of tobacco and orange peel.
This Brunello is approaching readiness but will show its best over the next decade. It is best enjoyed between 2026 and 2036, with its peak window likely between 2028 and 2032 as the tannins soften and the tertiary layers emerge.
