Mazzei Chianti Classico Riserva 'Ser Lapo'

Mazzei Chianti Classico Riserva 'Ser Lapo'

A solid, well-shaped, focused and vibrant riserva with aromas of wild currants, Morello cherries, warm herbs and baking spices. It’s medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins, yet it has so much intensity and drive. Structured and balanced, with great energy at the center. Succulent and agile, with a lively core of juicy forest berries mingling with the dried herbs and funneling toward the focused, medium finish. - James Suckling

Mazzei Chianti Classico Riserva 'Ser Lapo'

Mazzei’s Castello di Fonterutoli estate benefits from high-elevation vineyards with stony galestro soils that enhance drainage and diurnal range. In strong recent vintages like 2019 or 2020, the region saw balanced warmth and well-timed rain, creating conditions ideal for Sangiovese: slow ripening, excellent phenolic development, and preserved acidity. These conditions allowed for a wine like Ser Lapo to show both ripeness and tension, with aging potential and clear site expression.

Tasting Notes:
Ser Lapo is a bold, structured expression of Chianti Classico Riserva, offering aromas of black cherry, dried herbs, violet, and spice box, backed by subtle notes of leather, cedar, and tobacco. On the palate, it’s medium- to full-bodied, delivering rich layers of dark plum, sour cherry, graphite, and balsamic hints. Firm tannins and vibrant acidity support a long, savory finish that balances elegance with power.

Serving Suggestions:
17–18°C (63–65°F) in large red wine glasses. Decanting for 30–60 minutes helps to soften the tannins and enhance aromatics. Best paired with Tuscan-style roast meats, wild boar pappardelle, mature Pecorino Toscano, or grilled portobello mushrooms. This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for 8–10 years to reveal more earthy and savory complexity.
