Marchesi Antinori Solaia 2021

The 2021 growing season was marked by a balanced and favorable climate. After a cold and dry winter, spring saw consistent temperatures and minimal frost risk, supporting healthy bud break. Summer was warm and dry, but without extreme heat spikes, allowing for even ripening and excellent concentration in the grapes. Significant diurnal temperature shifts in late summer enhanced aromatic complexity and acidity, especially in the Sangiovese. The result was a harvest of perfectly mature, healthy grapes with ideal balance between sugar, tannin, and acidity; ideal for crafting a structured and age-worthy Solaia.

Tasting Notes:
Solaia 2021 opens with an enveloping bouquet of black cherry, wild blackberry, and cassis, accented by violet, graphite, and subtle hints of cedar and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is powerful yet polished, with firm, velvety tannins supporting layers of ripe black fruit, crushed herbs, tobacco, and sweet spice. The Cabernet Sauvignon provides depth and structure, while the Sangiovese lends freshness, elegance, and a lifted aromatic profile. Finely integrated oak and bright acidity lead to a long, layered finish with notes of espresso, licorice, and mineral complexity. It is a wine of grandeur and finesse, built for longevity.

Serving Recommendations:
Decant for at least 2 hours prior to serving to allow the wine to open fully and express its complexity. Best served at 16–18Β°C (60–64Β°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses. Ideal food pairings include dry-aged steaks, roasted lamb, truffle risottos, or aged cheeses such as Parmigiano-Reggiano. While it offers immense pleasure now, cellaring for 10–20+ years will allow the wine to develop even greater nuance and harmony.
