l'Orme de Rauzan-Gassies 2016 Bordeaux

l'Orme de Rauzan-Gassies 2016 Bordeaux

This wine is dark purple-red, with earthy and purposeful aromas. The fruit is rich, dense and closely constituted, just beginning to leave the flush of youth behind it but with plenty of cladding to take it through another half-dozen years of ageing if you wish. The innate depth and tenacity of the fruit suggest serious vineyard origins. Best in Show. - Decanter

l'Orme de Rauzan-Gassies 2016 Bordeaux

The 2016 vintage is considered one of Bordeaux’s greatest. A wet spring replenished water reserves, followed by a warm, dry summer that allowed for slow, even ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Cool nighttime temperatures preserved acidity and aromatic freshness, while optimal conditions during harvest ensured grapes with deep color, phenolic ripeness, and balanced tannins. The result is a wine that combines concentration, finesse, and impressive longevity.

Tasting Notes & Serving Suggestions:
Aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum, and cherry compote are layered with notes of cedar, graphite, and dried violets. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and silky, displaying flavors of blackberry, dark chocolate, and tobacco leaf, supported by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish is smooth and refined, with lingering hints of spice, minerality, and subtle oak.
Serve at 17–18°C (63–65°F) in Bordeaux-style glasses to highlight its aromatic complexity and structure. Decant for 45–60 minutes to soften tannins and open up the bouquet. Ideal pairings include grilled ribeye steak, braised lamb shanks, duck confit, or aged Comté. Enjoyable now with proper aeration, but capable of evolving gracefully for 10–12 years.
